As we spend more time at home due to the pandemic the Poison Lines have seen an incredible increase in calls to their centres as a result of our pet’s ingestion everyday items that we have in our house.

Most people would not even think these items are toxic to our pets.

As we continue to look at our top ten pandemic poisons for our pets, at #2 we have

Bread Dough or Types of Dough

Toxicity Level: Moderate.

Affects: Cats & Dogs

Call Increase: 259%

Why is raw bread dough or any other type of dough so toxic to our dogs and cats?

Even if a small amount is ingested the unbaked dough can be dangerous. The unbaked dough will expand in the pet’s stomach. The stomach is a warm, moist environment which will cause the dough to expand. Your pet can suffer from a bloated stomach or could progress to twisting of the stomach – this is a less common result but still possible.

Symptoms:

  • Vomiting
  • Non-productive vomiting (retching)
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Bloated stomach
  • Weakness
  • Collapsing
  • Death

My Pet ate some dough. What do I do?

Should your pet ingest dough call your vet or a 24 hour clinic right away.

  • While using yeast make sure none of the contents is dropped on the floor
  • If you are letting bread rise keep it out of reach of your pets
  • Don’t feed any uncooked dough to pets
  • Clean all surfaces once you are done.
