Quickly approaching is Valentine’s Day. Which means on this special day people will be receiving chocolates, candies, flowers and presents.

While we enjoy theses foods at this time of the year. Every pet owner should know that chocolates and candies are in the top 5 foods that SHOULD NOT be given to pets.

The severity of chocolate toxicity varies greatly depending on the type and amount of chocolate ingested and the size of the pet. The darker and less sweet the chocolate, the more toxic it can be to dogs. But ingestion of chocolate and candy should be a concern.

Dogs make up 95% of calls at the poison Help Line, they say cats are usually too discriminating to eat large amounts of chocolate.

Common signs to watch for:

  • Hyperactivity
  • Restlessness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Increased thirst
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Hypertension (elevated blood pressure)
  • Abnormal heart rhythms
  • Tremors
  • Hyperthermia (elevated body temperature)
