One thing that pet owners do need to be aware of during this time is the affect this could have on your pet.

Now don’t panic – it has nothing to do with your furkid catching C19, but a weight issue.

For the majority of us we are now at home with our furkids. When you are at home there will be a tenancy for you to give out more treats then you normally would each day.

Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with treats. You just need to make sure they are given in moderation as not to have your pet put on weight.

If you are providing a few more treats then normal and your furkid is getting more exercise than usual… Great !! But if the treats are increasing and the exercise isn’t that’s not good.

Here are some tips to help.

  1. Make the effort to increase the walks when possible.
  2. Increase play time with your pet out side, be it fetch  etc.
  3. If you are a cat owner, you can get a laser pointer or other toys that increase play.

What I started doing is taking the dog treats I give out and breaking them into 2 or 3 pieces, giving out a smaller piece each time instead of the whole treat each time.

This allows me to give treats more frequently throughout the day, but not really increase the amount of treats overall.

The odd time I replace the treat with a bit of apple. Small pieces of apple can be given in moderation of course.
